There are thousands of planets in Starfield, and with a galaxy so big, how can authorities keep track of illegal smuggling and piracy? The UC and Freestar Collective sure have their work cut out for them. You’ll find the Red Mile on the galaxy's fringes, an independent spaceport and bar. The Red Mile attracts patrons from across space who are looking to gamble and bet on human lives in the notorious Red Mile Race.

The Red Mile Race is a dangerous challenge that few ever return from. However, you’ll be rewarded with a generous sum of credits and valuable equipment if completed. You’ll also gain notoriety in the Red Mile from its patrons.

Where Is The Red Mile Run

The Red Mile Run takes place in, well, the Red Mile, a spaceport and bar found on Porrima III in the Porrima system. Since it's so far away, you will likely need to make multiple Grav Jumps before reaching the system.

You'll likely visit Porrima III and the Red Mile after accepting to help Salinas retrieve a package during the Shipment for Salinas mission, which is picked up from Apex Electronics in the Well of New Atlantis.

How To Start The Red Mile Run

The Red Mile will already be an unlocked location on the surface of Porrima III. Once you enter the Red Mile, you’ll encounter Stocker, the head of security at the Red Mile, and Ecliptic Mercenary, catching a patron leaving without paying their tab.

The two are interrupted by Mei Devine, the Red Mile owner and Red Mile Run organizer, who will resolve the issue. You’ll then be free to talk to Mei Devine about the Red Mile. Inquire about the Red Mile Run to learn how to participate and win.

Once you select the “I Want to run, the Red Mile” dialogue option, Mei will ask if you are under the influence of any drugs or stimulants. You must answer with the “I’m sober, doing this of my own free will, and ready to go” dialogue option.

Mei will proceed to the stage by the door leading to the Red Mile and announce your run. You have to wait for this to finish each time you begin a run.

How To Complete The Red Mile Run

To complete the Red Mile Run, you need to sprint to the beacon found on the other side of the crater, activate it, and run back to the Red Mile.

Although a simple task on paper, there are a plethora of hazards that can easily kill you throughout the course. You will be bombarded by projectiles and be attacked by dozens of Red Mile Maulers.

Red Mile Maulers deal high damage and will spawn all around you; despite their low level, they have extremely high damage resistance. Like Donovan Rhys, the champion of the Red Mile, says it’s best not to hesitate and just run.

Be careful bringing followers into the crater, as Red Mile Maulers will swarm them. This can cause some issues when returning to the Red Mile, as your companion and the Red Mile Maulers will swarm the entrance.

How To Use Chems To Win The Red Mile Race

Mei states to use whatever tools you’d like to survive, so chems are definitely on the table despite her asking if you were sober before being able to run.

If you’ve spent any time in the Red Mile, you will have bumped into Donovan Rhys, the champion of the Red Mile Run with 28 races to his name. Before you can talk to him, he will ask you to get him a Runner’s Rush from the bar.

The Runner’s Rush is your key to winning the Red Mile Race. Runner’s Rush enhances your movement capabilities by increasing the following stats:

  • +20 percent Movement Speed for three minutes.
  • +50 percent Damage Resistance for two minutes.
  • +25 percent O2 Recovery for three minutes.

If you’re struggling to complete the run with Runner’s Rush, double up with other chems, such as Amp, as this chem increases the following stats:

  • +35 percent Movement Speed for two minutes.
  • 2x Jump Height for two minutes.

Amp will allow you to optimize your boost pack jump, helping you ascend to the beacon and descend while avoiding all the Red Mile Maulers.

Sati Chandra’s inventory will restock every 24 hours, so you can either purchase a room at the Red Mile or sleep in your spaceship. We recommend the latter since you will need to leave the Red Mile to be able to participate in repeat runs.

The Red Mile Run is not timed, so you will have as much time as you want to complete the race. There are some valuable items scattered around the crater, such as the Epic Calibrated Star Roamer Spacesuit adjacent to the beacon.

Running The Red Mile Run Route

Generally, the right or left routes are safer than gunning it down the middle as there are fewer obstacles and enemies to fight. This makes it a lot easier to navigate as you won't have to dodge the Red Mile Mauler projectiles.

However, if you’re going for gold and toppling Donovan Rhys off the top of the leaderboard, you will want to run down the middle, as this saves a lot of time.

Once you hit the beacon, run back to the elevator to the Red Mile and speak to Mei to claim your reward. For every run, you’ll earn the following:

  • 3,300 credits.
  • 110 XP
  • Assortment of medical supplies.
  • One random weapon and ammo.

Consider leveling up your Fitness skill, as this will increase your character's O2 capacity, as you will constantly run out of O2 during the run.

What Happens If You Beat The Red Mile Run High Score

Starfield: How To Complete The Red Mile Race (6)

You can participate in repeated Red Mile Runs to earn the rewards above. If you complete 28 runs, you will be rewarded with the following items:

  • Desperation - a unique AA-99 11mm rare rifle.
  • Mounted Red Mile Apex decoration.

The Desperation is a rare variant of the AA-99 rifle that features the Cornered weapon trait, which increases the damage of the weapon the lower your health becomes.

The Mounted Red Mile Apex decoration is an identical replica of the Red Mile Mauler head mounted above the Red Mile Bar. You can place this while decorating your home or outpost.

You will need to leave the Red Mile and return to trigger the "I want to run the Red Mile” dialogue option with Mei. Fast traveling to your ship and reentering the Red Mile resets this.

Beat Donovan Rhys’ high score of 28, and Mei will congratulate you on your triumph; you’ll earn bragging rights against Donovan Rhys and become the new Red Mile Run champion. However, this ispurely an extra dialogue option with Donovan.

If you lose track of the number of runs you've completed, check the leaderboard at the bar's entrance.

You’ll also increase your reputation with the local patronsand Red Mile Staff by completing runs. While most of this is flavor text and dialogue, Sati Chandra sometimes gives you free items. You can still go on runs at the Red Mile after you’ve beaten Donovan’s high score.
