Ram upgrade compatibility (2025)

Hi there,

I want to upgrade the ram for this HP desktop 580-130, here's the spec for this PC:

in the spec it saids it supports up to 16GB DDR4-2400.

Will it work if I put 2666MHz rams on it? Is the max that I can put on the PC a pair of 8GB DDR4-2400 ram?

Also the max ram I can have is 16gb right? I can't go higher?

I have a HP destop 580-127KR, the PC has a basswood main board.

It is same with yours. Basswood's official spec is up to DDR4 19200.

But i did not believe HP official spec about RAM. So i bought DDR4 21300 8GB DIMM of SAMSUNG.

It is unbeliveble but worked well.

If you obey (and believe) the specifications, then you cannot go higher.

If you wish to "experiment", by using two 16 GB sticks, you will not hurt the motherboard by doing so.

If it boots, confirm that the motherboard is using 32 GB, not "ignoring" half of this RAM.

The 64-bit version of Windows will support much more than 32 GB of RAM.

It should, but there won't be any improvement in performance.

Most sticks of RAM have a SPD (Serial Presence Detect) chip with a "timing table" that lists the various speeds that the RAM will support -- all slower than its advertised speed.

For example, on my computer:

So, the RAM that you propose should "underclock" to work at "2400" instead of its listed maximum of "2666". Note that this is "underclocking" -- running the RAM at slower than its maximum speed -- not "overclocking" -- configuring the motherboard to run the RAM faster than its maximum speed. In your case, your motherboard does not support "overclocking". So, any speculation about "overclocking" is off-topic.

Most HP consumer PCs don't support BIOS overclocking. This means your BIOS may not support AMD's A-XMP or AMP (AMD Memory Profile) Technology. You would have to enter the BIOS. Then check for any memory tweaking settings. No memory tweaking = no XMP support.

So a 2666 MHz stick of memory may only run at 2400 MHz. HP's PC also tend to have tight memory tolerances. Some, otherwise compatible, memory brands just don't work when installed in HP motherboards. Dual channel memory should be installed in pairs or kits. Memory specifications should match (speed, timing, and density).

Mixing different: memory brands and specifications creates complexity and possible boot errors.

Crucial Memory (Link) works well in HP PCs when you drill down to your PC's specific product number or use the Memory Scanner.

HP specs state your PC supports up to 16 GB of DDR4-2400 memory on 64 bit operating systems.

Nice.

You're getting full bandwidth. I have seen some HP PCs max out per HP specs. Other select HP PCs fail to boot.

Are you mixing memory speeds and timings? This sometimes causes problems.

I just installed DIMM to slot and then power on.

I did not enter to bios , not mix speed.

It seem to be JEDEC standard by using SPD.

I bought the Corsair Dominator 16GB 2400mhz C10 RAM:

I took HP's specs seriously so I went for everything that fits the spec and it did boot up and running well.

But seems like I still have room to upgrade in the future if I want to. But so far it's more than good enough for me.
