In my last article (https://lnkd.in/ezxN3yRn) I introduced various complex concepts, based on the book Organizational Traps, from Argyris. In this post, I would like to take you along this work in progress, in which I use Strategic Drawing to better explain these complex concepts and also start to introduce some practical tools. In that last article I presented an overview of how in a lot of organizations a lot of dysfunctional behaviour abounds, identifiable by comments such as “nothing will ever change here” and the people stating this feeling trapped. The case is made however that we are trapped by our own behavior and the keys to come out of these situations are in our own hands. The key to getting out of these organizational traps lies in model behaviour. The type of behaviour required to get out of these traps is not usually unknown: the case is more that we actually are not acting in accordance with the behaviour we espouse.Useful ToolsTo get out of this repeating pattern, a first step is to become conscious of it: an extremely useful tool to this end is the so called left-hand column. With this as a basis, these can be investigated and one’s ladder of inference can be analyzed. This ladder of inference then can be used in general as a communication framework.Strategic Drawing is also a tool par excellence for making the ladder of inferences underlying a conversation visible and actionable. We’d love to help you out in this sense, if you can see its utility for your situation or workshop.Would you like to know more about this tools, then look out for my next article in which these are worked out in more detail.Philip Ramondt, strategic drawer/industrial design engineerphilip@kommunikative.nl
