BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

TEACHER ELEMENTARY

DEFINITION

Under the supervision of a school site administrator or designee, Elementary School Teachers will create a flexible program and class environment favorable to student learning and personal growth, establish effective rapport with students, motivate students to develop academic, technological, and social emotional skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for secondary school education, in accordance with each student’s ability, and establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Positions in this class are assigned to operate instructional programs for elementary grade levels. Incumbents are responsible to plan and implement lesson plans with technology integration, follow content standards and curriculum materials, participate in school and district level events and professional developments, assessments, data, communications, and student supervision; lead assigned assistants if applicable, and maintain routine program records.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  1. Teach oral and written language, social studies, mathematics, science, health, art, physical education, music, etc. to students, utilizing courses adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, other general elements of the course of study specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of school district.
  3. Provide planned learning experiences in order to motivate students and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  4. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials with technology integration and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  5. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  6. Evaluate student academic and social emotional growth, keep appropriate manual and electronic records, prepare manual and electronic progress reports and report cards by using District approved electronic system, and communicate with parents and guardians on the individual student’s progress personally and electronically.
  7. Administer district, state, and national standardized tests, analyze student assessment data, and utilize student data to guide instruction.
  8. Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, mental, and learning challenges.
  9. Create with assistance from students a functional and attractive environment for learning through displays, and bulletin boards.
  10. Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  11. Perform basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
  12. Maintain a safe and orderly environment for children in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips; decorate room for themes and seasons; take out, set up and put away equipment, toys and materials for activities.
  13. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  14. Coordinate conferences with parents/guardians; plan and conduct parent meetings.
  15. Set up and operate technical tools, audio visual equipment, and computers for student use, assign access codes or passwords to students, set-up student folders, and check computer and peripheral equipment for proper functioning.
  16. Select appropriate software for curriculum and integrate computer instruction into the instructional plan.
  17. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and /or on a district level.
  18. Serve on assigned committees and teams; participate in District mandated trainings, staff meetings, and student related meetings.
  19. Maintain a positive relationship with site and district leadership, teachers, and staff and promote school program and events.
  20. Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committee.
  21. May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
  22. Participate with other professional staff members in the social hygiene and outdoor education programs.
  23. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods of instruction, developmental needs, and behavior appropriate to elementary school students.
  2. Curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, technological tool, and activities
  3. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  4. Reading and writing in English and principles.
  5. Literature, art, music, dance, crafts, math and basic reading principles for elementary school students.
  6. Operation of standard office equipment.
  7. Basic manual and electronic record keeping techniques.
  8. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

  1. Develop and implement instructional plans that are aligned with curriculum and program standards and are interesting to children.
  2. Supervise students in classrooms, outside, and on field trips.
  3. Communicate well with children and motivate them to learn and participate in activities.
  4. Establish and maintain appropriate classroom behavior and deal effectively with student behavioral problems.
  5. Recognize and remove safety hazards.
  6. Learn laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to the assigned program.
  7. Maintain accurate records.
  8. Monitor and guide the work of assistants.
  9. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  10. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:

  1. Multiple Subject Credential with CLAD or EL Authorization
  2. Education: Bachelor’s degree.
  3. Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher.

Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a 12th grade proficiency level; math skills at an eighth grade proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; copying and coordinating information and records.
